Alvechurch FC are in great form in both league and cup.

Alvechurch FC have made it through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time in 26 years.

After beating Hanley Town in the preliminary round, they faced Market Drayton Town away – and notched up a thumping 5–1 victory, including a penalty from Thomas Turton, a hat trick from Josh March and a debut goal for substitute Javia Roberts.

Next up were NPL Premier high-flyers Grantham Town, away once again, for a seven-goal thriller. ’Church got off to a dream start, scoring after only 45 seconds through Babucar Sauane.

It was another exciting half hour until their second, a penalty after Jamie Willets was dragged back in the box.

With six-from-six regular penalty-taker Turton on the bench, it was left to March to take the kick and he drilled into the bottom left corner, sending the ’keeper the wrong way.

Grantham got back in the game on 43 minutes, but In added time AFC restored their two-goal cushion as March scored his 11th of the season and 7th in this competition.

After the break, Grantham had a goal disallowed for offside, but they did pull another back on 75’ to make it 2–3.

Alvechurch looked to have sealed the tie when substitute Luke Yates bagged their fourth with five minutes left of normal time, but there was a nervy end to the game when Ashley Carter’s own goal brought the score back to 3–4 during eight minutes of injury time.

However, ’Church hung on to reach the next stage for the first time since 1991.

Elsewhere, Alvechurch beat Redditch United 3–0 to progress to the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup, and they are up against Belper Town in the FA Trophy on Saturday October 7.

’Church’s defence of the JW Hunt Cup begins with an away fixture against MFL division 1 side Heath Hayes on Tuesday October 24, and they also have a first-round Integro League Cup match away to Stourbridge FC on Monday October 16.

Fourth in the league as we went to press, AFC’s recent victories include a 6–2 win at Romulus. Daniel Dubidat scored with two minutes on the clock, then the home side netted a penalty, before Turton restored ’Church’s lead with a spot-kick of his own and Dubidat made it 3-1 at the break.

Romulus then got themselves back in it with a goal at 52 minutes, but Dubidat completed his hat trick on 67. Another AFC penalty was then dispatched by Turton for 5–2, before late sub Yusifa Ceesay put the icing on the cake six minutes from time.

*  Evo Stik South Premier Division side Hereford FC have had their bid for Alvechurch centre back Ashley Carter rejected. Carter, who signed for AFC in the close season from Kidderminster Harriers, is on contract and the management immediately rejected the offer.

Church have signed versatile right-sided player Bekir Halil from Hinckley FC. Bekir can play full back, wing back and centre of defence and includes Sporting Khalsa, Shawbury, Studley and Wolverhampton Casuals amongst his previous clubs.

Seventeen-year-old Alvechurch youth team player Ben Tilbury has signed for the first team following some standout performances and great attitude in training sessions.

18s manager Tyrone Henderson says, “Ben always looked like a potential first team player when he came to the club at 14 years old.

“His recent performances, including two crucial goals in the local derby against Bromsgrove, earned him a call-up as captain for the Birmingham County side and he is definitely one to watch for the future.”

Long-time fan favourite Connor Deards has decided to leave for pastures new, joining Bromsgrove Sporting. Connor was influential in last season’s treble-winning success, and AFC wish him every success at Bromsgrove in their promotion push.
