Crucial victory in derby

Alvechurch FC have the bragging rights over Redditch United.

It was a great start to 2020 as Alvechurch picked up a huge three points with a brilliant display away to Redditch United.

As well as being a local derby, it was a crucial game for both teams, with Redditch bottom of the table and ’Church one place above them.

The home side created the first chance of the game, but after 15 minutes Jordan Thomas handled the ball in the box leading to a penalty for Alvechurch – Louis Monaghan’s spot-kick hit the post but Aaron Birch was on hand to score the rebound.

The visitors then took control of the game, with Joe Hull denied by a good save from Kieran Boucher before Kyle Morrison volleyed in from the resulting corner to double ’Church’s lead.

They started the second half in the same vein; more or less sealing the win with a stunning third goal finished well by debutant Lewis Wright.

However, Joshua Endall poked in from a controversial corner to get Redditch back into the game, before Brandon Diau bagged them a second. But despite the pressure, Alvechurch held firm for a 3–2 victory.

Unfortunately, ’Church went on to lose their next two matches – 1–0 at home to Royston Town and 2–1 away at Barwell – having also suffered a 4–1 defeat at second-place Bromsgrove Sporting on Boxing Day, complete with a red card and a penalty.

As we went to press, they remained two places off the bottom of the table.

Several recently postponed matches have now been rearranged – see fixtures list for details.

* Alvechurch are delighted to announce the arrival of midfield player Lewis Wright on loan from local rivals Halesowen Town.

Lewis has already made a big difference on the right-hand side of the midfield. He has previously played for Redditch United and Tamworth in the Southern League Central division.

Alongside Lewis are Bermudan international Knory Scott, an attacking midfield player who joins on loan from Kidderminster Harriers, and Papa Orlando Ronaldo Joao from Northern Premier League Division 1 West side Market Drayton Town.

Alvechurch have also strengthened their forward options with Nehemia Zazi from Coleshill Town and Khaellem Khiyah from Bedworth Town.

*  Ethan Jones, who only arrived in December from Halesowen Town and never played a match for ’Church, has decided to join fellow Southern League Central team Hednesford Town.

Also departing is Kieran Cook, who had recently returned to Lye Meadow after following former manager Ian Long to Stourbridge FC. After a couple of matches for Alvechurch, Kieran decided to up sticks again and joined local rivals Rushall Olympic FC.

Meanwhile, there’s some good news from a former Alvechurch player – Josh March has joined Football League Division 2 side Forest Green Rovers.

Josh had joined AFC as an 18-year-old in 2015 from Causeway United, and played a major part in the continued success of the club including the back-to-back promotions and Southern League play-off finals last season.

He also enjoyed cup success with Alvechurch, winning the Worcestershire Senior Urn, JW Hunt Cup, Midland League Cup and Worcestershire Senior Cup.

Josh played 184 matches for ’Church, scoring 81 goals, before joining National League North side Leamington this season.

Despite playing at a higher level, Josh has continued to bang in the goals, scoring a staggering 24 goals in 27 games for the Warwickshire side including a five-minute hat trick against AFC Telford.
