AFC in action

Alvechurch FC are not letting FA Cup defeat get them down.

Alvechurch FC’s dream of reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup is over, after they lost 2–1 away to Northern Premier League Premier Division side Buxton FC.

Having reached the third qualifying round of the cup for the first time in 26 years, ’Church led from the 10th minute via Daniel Dubidat, but an equaliser with three minutes to go and a winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time saw them crash out after a heroic performance against a higher-ranked team.

However, AFC are still involved in no fewer than four other cup competitions, starting with the FA Trophy where they beat fellow EvoStik Division 1 South side Belper 2–1 away in the preliminary round.

This was a well-earned victory and a really entertaining encounter, with plenty of chances at both ends in opening sector.

’Church carved out the lead on 23 minutes with a great finish from Dubidat, and Thomas Turton made it two just after the half-hour from 25 yards out.

The home side found a fortunate way back into the game just three minutes later with a penalty after the ball hit Jamie Ashmore’s arm as the ball spun up off the attackers’ boot – a lifeline Belper had looked unlikely to get.

The game really turned AFC’s way on 77 minutes when Belper were reduced to 10 men, and the visitors finished the game in the ascendancy.

As we went to press, Alvechurch were due to meet Southern League Division 1 side Cambridge City in the 1st round proper on October 28 – and just before that, they were to begin their defence of the JW Hunt Cup away to MFL division 1 side Heath Hayes on October 24.

The Churchmen also have a first-round Integro League Cup match to look forward to, away to Stourbridge FC on November 6 (postponed from October 16 due to floodlight failure), and they are waiting for details of their second-round match in the Birmingham Senior Cup.

Meanwhile, in the league, Alvechurch have been notching up the wins – apart from a blip when they lost 5–1 at home to Stamford. At the time of writing, they were sixth in the table with a couple of games in hand.

* Teenage forward Luke Yates has become the fourth player to be placed on contract this season.

He has made a big impression since joining from West Midland League Premier Division side Wednesfield, where he had impressed the Alvechurch management during the JW Hunt Cup final.

’Church have now signed under-23 goalkeeper Jasmin Keranovic on loan West Bromwich Albion, to compete for the number 1 jersey with Paul Evans – along with Lewis Gwilliams, who has returned to the club after a successful loan spell at Rugby Town.

Experienced centre back Alex Dallison has joined AFC from Midland Football League Premier division side Lye Town, while forward Nathaniel Waite has rejoined the club, having played under manager Ian Long at Tividale where he scored 22 goals in their Midland Football League championship year.

Striker Luke Keen has departed to join fellow Northern Premier League division 1 side Bedworth United. Due to competition amongst the forward positions he only started two games, but scored a wonder goal in the victory away at Loughborough Dynamo.

Finally, Black Country Rangers have signed Mark Withington, who has been a regular substitute for AFC.

* AFC fans have set up a supporters’ forum to include discussions, away day coach details, forthcoming events and ways the supporters can help the club progress throughout the season.
