On course for bright future

Kings Norton Golf Club is bucking the trend of golf clubs cutting budgets by investing more than £600,000 in its course.

The club, at Weatheroak Hill, Alvechurch, has spent more than £360,000 alone on machinery to improve and maintain its 27 holes.

And after one of the hottest and driest summers on record last year, the club is also investing £58,000 in a brand-new greens irrigation system.

And in a move particularly popular with members and visitors, the club is spending £190,000 over the next three years remodelling and improving all of the 85 bunkers.

This includes relining and replacing the sand with around 300 tons of China Grey and rebuilding the bunker faces with layers of turf in a classic “revetted” style (right).

Since the appointment of their new course manager, Neill Smith, last August the course at Kings Norton has seen a rapid transformation, quickly gaining a reputation as one of the best conditioned golf courses in the Midlands.

Neill has overseen the investment in a brand-new fleet of 12 Toro greens machines, including two Greens Tri Flex Mowers, two Greens Pro Rollers, a Pro Core Coring Machine, a Top Dresser, a Multi Spray Turf Sprayer and two Workman MDX Utility Vehicles alongside enhanced staff training.

Kings Norton has also appointed Steve Dougan, PGA Fellow Professional and experienced club manager to oversee the day-to-day operations at the club.

Steve will be working closely with the board of directors, course manager, head professional and caterers to grow and improve all aspects of the business as well as members’ and guests’ experience at the club.
