Yes, it’s that time of year again – we’re turning our attention to weddings, and the ever-growing array of local businesses and services offering everything a bride- and groom-to-be (and their families and guests) could possibly need.

The centrepiece of the wedding reception is the cake, and at Cake Magic of Bromsgrove, the sky’s the limit in terms of design and flavour. Flowers are also a time-honoured wedding essential, from the bridal bouquet to the ushers’ buttonholes to the pedestals in the church, and Kingfisher Flowers of Alvechurch can provide a full service… meanwhile, since it’s almost Valentine’s Day and there are probably a few romantics out there thinking of proposing, remember that Kingfisher can also prepare a beautiful Valentine’s bouquet to help you say it with flowers!

The same goes for Cupitt Jewellers of Bromsgrove, where you’ll find traditional and contemporary engagement and wedding rings, plus a full range of jewellery suitable for wearing at weddings and giving as gifts. For a totally different style, Coconut Pink jewellery (designed and handmade in Blackwell) offers limited-edition designs using vintage and new beads, with commissions taken.

Continental Collections in Barnt Green provides a wealth of choice for bridesmaids, evening guests and mothers of the bride and groom, with stunning occasionwear, accessories and hat hire. The bride and attendants can ensure that their underwear is as beautiful as their outerwear by choosing luxurious lingerie from Temptations of Barnt Green, which also sells a range of swimwear – perfect for a honeymoon!

Everyone wants to look their best at a wedding, whether they are taking part in the ceremony or attending as a guest, and Bliss Hair Therapy in Alvechurch will take care of your hair and beauty requirements – including pre-wedding trials to ensure you find the perfect style. Meanwhile, Beauticle of Barnt Green carries out sensational spray tans and natural nail treatments, ideal for hen nights and honeymoons as well as the big day itself.

Many of the shops and services offer gift vouchers, which are a great idea for wedding or engagement presents or perhaps gifts for bridesmaids and mums. However, if you prefer to pick out a present yourself, check out the range at It’s A Gift in Barnt Green. The Paws Here section of the store is also the place to go if your beloved pets are taking part in the ceremony, with outfits and accessories for dogs and cats!

The local area also boasts several stunning venues in which to hold a wedding and/or reception. Hillscourt Conference Centre, with its idyllic surroundings in the Lickey Hills, offers fabulous accommodation and function facilities, while The Queen’s Head Inn at Stoke Pound has a wonderful canalside location and an extremely talented head chef – keep reading this article to discover more about the venue’s latest idea!

If you’re organising the catering yourself, either for an intimate reception on the day or a dinner party before or after the wedding, The Spice Trade can provide you with delicious and authentic Indian food.

Entertainment is also a hugely important part of a wedding, whether you’re seeking music for the ceremony or reception or something to keep guests entertained while the photos are completed.

Stuart Toogood of Occasional Guitars (pictured left) is an ideal choice, with a varied repertoire of songs from the musicals and pop classics by the likes of Elton John and The Beatles. The talented guitarist, based in Cofton Hackett, recently notched up his 100th wedding in three years. Stuart can also provide sophisticated background music for other special occasions, such as Ron and Maggie Atkinson’s summer party last year.

For a more unusual entertainment option, how about hiring your very own magician? Christian Fletcher of Alvechurch has built up an impressive reputation as a professional entertainer at weddings and events, and has just had an audition for the prestigious Magic Circle.

“Magic is a great ice breaker and really gets people talking,” says Christian, who performs across the UK and as far afield as Las Vegas and Dubai. “No matter what language you speak, how old you are or what background you come from, that split second of wonder and amazement is something everybody loves to experience.”

Some couples ask him to perform whilst the photographs are taken, while others have him perform to the tables during the meal. “I think the most effective time is after the speeches – there is generally an hour or so where nothing is happening, so I can informally entertain the guests and get everyone in the mood for a party.”

Christian loves getting the guests involved, and doesn’t stick to card tricks, preferring to borrow things from the audience so they know there’s no trickery involved: “When I vanish someone’s wedding ring, and make it reappear on my car keys, they know it’s not a ‘gimmicked’ ring. And when someone gives me a signed £20 note, and it disappears only to be found inside a kiwi fruit, it’s their money with their signature on it, so they know it’s not a fake!”

This personal touch also makes the show more memorable, and Christian often gets comments from people who saw him several years ago and can still remember him stealing their watch right off their own wrist without them knowing!

Bookings range from an extravagant Sikh wedding with more than 500 guests to a low key country house gathering, while a man from Kidderminster has now booked Christian for the fourth time: “He has four daughters, and employed me to entertain at each of their weddings!”

Acceptance into the Magic Circle is a tough process – Christian was interviewed by one of the Senior members before auditioning in front of around 30 magicians. He should get his results shortly.

“I’m pleased to say it went well and the feedback was very positive! Membership will show that I perform to a high standard, and it’s nice to be recognised by other top professionals.”

Christian also performs at various wedding fairs – get in touch to see where and when! Email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or see his Facebook fan page “Christian Fletcher Magic.”

The Queen’s Head Inn at Stoke Pound is offering couples the chance to experience just what it would be like to be a guest – at their own wedding! Those recently engaged can contact the Queen’s Head and 35 lucky couples will be invited as guests to a special wedding reception event on Saturday March 6.

From welcome drinks to the cutting of the cake, the happy couples will enjoy the lavish hospitality bestowed on real wedding parties, including a full wedding breakfast to sample the cuisine of head chef Chris Long. The party will continue well into the evening with a disco.
