Village Food & Drink

It’s time to celebrate!

It only seems like five minutes since we were preparing for last Christmas, but the festive season is almost upon us once more – so, putting aside concerns about life flashing by far too quickly these days, let’s get ready for The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

If you’re anything like certain members of The Village team (The Grinch not included), you’ll be wanting to make the most of the season by putting your tree up in early December, and Nordmann ‘Non-Drop’ trees will be available at Cofton Church Lane, Barnt Green as of November 24.

You can also collect a Nordmann ‘Non-Drop’ tree from Hopwood Garden Centre, which nets all sizes of tree for easy transport, and also offers the potted Fraser Silver Fir.

There’s nothing like a roaring open fire to make your home feel cosy at Christmas, and if you’re lucky enough to have one then you’ll be pleased to know that seasoned hardwood logs are available from Coopers Farm Shop.

Of course, you can also find a selection of local produce at the Alvechurch shop, from locally-reared meats to freshly baked breads and cakes and deli products – ideal if you’re entertaining at home this Christmas.

However, you may prefer to take family and friends out for a meal instead of cooking, and The Mint Lounge in Bromsgrove is offering a feast during December and on Christmas Day itself, when you can choose from an Indian or traditional English menu.

Traditional home-cooked pub fare is always available at The Swan in Alvechurch, which has a great programme of entertainment in the run-up to Christmas and is also opening for drinks on Christmas Day.

Fine food and entertainment are both on the menu at Hillscourt, with a few party night dates still available as we go to press – but hurry if you want to book!

And when you’re heading out to festive parties or perhaps a Christmas wedding, why not travel in style with a chauffeured car from C&M Prestige Cars of Bromsgrove?

Another way to make yourself feel special is to visit the luxurious Chessgrove Day Spa and be totally pampered – or pop along to BeautyBox of Barnt Green for a range of beauty treatments and therapies.

Both of these businesses sell gift vouchers, but if you want to give a wrapped present then The Joshua Tree in Alvechurch has plenty of ideas to choose from, as well as beautiful cards. Cupitt of Bromsgrove and RF Collyer of Rubery offer a range of fabulous jewellery as well as watches and giftware.

We might be looking forward to Christmas, but there’s a group in Tardebigge who won’t be quite so elated by the start of the festive season. . . the turkeys on Tom Ryan’s farm!

Tardebigge Turkeys began last year as an experiment, and was so successful that it has been expanded with 29 bronze turkeys now being reared for Christmas.

“They live at the end of the garden and have a large wooden shed to sleep in – they are extremely well looked after and seem very happy,” says Tom. “We have set up a webcam to make sure they are not up to mischief!”

You can watch them at, and if you’d like to order one for your dinner, call 01527 550333.
