With more and more people taking an interest in where their food comes from and how it affects the environment, it’s good to hear that a local take-away is committed to sourcing local produce.

Ben’s Lickey Hills Fish Bar, the popular family-run business in Rednal, has agreed a deal with a Worcestershire farmer to supply the firm with the best quality Maris Piper potatoes – so when you tuck in to your tasty chips, you’ll know exactly where they came from.

Ben Ascott, who runs the shop with fiancee Vicky, has even been able to work alongside the farmer in the harvesting and selection of the potatoes.

“The problem most chip shops have is consistency from the potato merchants,” explains Ben. “But by cutting out the middleman, we know exactly what we are buying every time.”

This approach ensures quality as well as sustainability, which have always been cornerstones of the 10-year-old business. The wide selection of fish and seafood is also sourced from sustainable stocks where possible and delivered daily to ensure freshness.

As well as tasty fresh food, the fish bar offers excellent customer service – the staff will always cook to order upon request, so your fish will be served to you straight from the fryer.

The attention to detail even extends to the installation of separate fryers so that vegetarians and those who do not eat meat for religious reasons can be assured that the oil has not been used to cook any meat products.

Earlier this year the fish bar underwent a complete refurbishment with a new layout, and the extensive menu – featuring kebabs, pies and burgers as well as traditional fish and chips – is now displayed on special digital screens behind the counter.

The shop and kitchen are immaculate throughout, with the highest standards of hygiene adhered to – and the same applies to the adjacent sister business, Ben’s Mediterranean Pizza and Pasta Bar, which is run by Ben’s parents Mary and Chris.

Ben says that the family are always open to suggestions from customers, so if there is anything you’d particularly like to see on the menu, just mention it to the friendly staff!
Both the fish bar and the Mediterranean offer a home delivery service within a five-mile radius, including areas of Bromsgrove.

Daily specials are available throughout the week, including award-winning Lashford sausages with chips and gravy, which has proven to be a top seller!

Don’t forget that Ben’s hog roast takes place every Saturday from 10.30am (weather permitting!) – the juicy pork rolls are especially popular with customers. Ben says the next year will be their toughest challenge, with the state of the economy and with the price of potatoes rocketing – but the top quality of the food and service is sure to keep customers happy.
