Home Guard

Village reader Robert Andrews brought us this photograph of the Alvechurch Home Guard in 1945, featuring his grandfather, Percy Horrix – far left on the back row.

Percy was a well-known figure in the village, having been born on Snake Lane and later worked as a gardener for Dr Vollom at the Old House on Bear Hill.

Alvechurch Home Guard (‘A’ Company) was part of the 9th Worcestershire (Redditch) Battalion – the group is thought to be pictured at the back of the Red Lion and this photo is featured in the book Alvechurch 1920-1960.

Can you fill in any of the blanks?
