Our September 2004 cover showed Norwegian Fjords Johan and Sassy, whose owners, Janice and John Corbett, were preparing to ride them along the South Downs Way in aid of BASICS, a charity providing support to the ambulance service.

IN THE NEWS: Hopwood residents were united in their opposition to a planned animal rendering plant in their village.

A newly-formed campaign group, Hopwood Against Rendering Movement (HARM), had hired lawyers to assist in the fight and launched a public appeal to raise funds.

The Village was also inundated with letters from people opposed to the plans, which included a 25-metre chimney and the capacity for rendering 100,000kg of offal every day.

* Alvechurch FC were starting the new season with a new manager – Peter Frain, a former player for West Bromwich Albion and England Under-18s – and the team had kicked off a run of pre-season friendlies with a 5-1 away win against Bartley Green.

The club was also seeking sponsorship for refurbishment.

* Lickey Hills Primary School celebrated its 50th anniversary with a playground party for pupils past and present, staff and parents.

A Junior School production featured iconic figures from the past five decades, and pupils also buried a time capsule and helped create a wall hanging.
