Feb 06 cover

A look back at what was happening around here in February 2006.

Ah, the good old days when it snowed every winter. . . our February 2006 cover showed a scenic Alvechurch centre, snapped from the office window.

Campaigners were urging as many people as possible to attend the public inquiry into plans for an animal rendering plant at Mayfield Farm in Hopwood, after almost 1,000 letters of objection were received by county council officials.

Elsewhere, our What’s On section revealed that music mogul Pete Waterman would be giving a talk at St Bartholomew’s Church, Tardebigge.

Ark cafe

* The Ark at St Laurence Church, Alvechurch, was now opening as a café every Thursday, offering coffee and cake in the morning and a full lunch menu served by volunteers.

Organisers intended to use local produce and support Fairtrade, and the inaugural lunch (right) was enjoyed by many villagers.

Geared-Up Girls

* Hopwood women Debbie Weston and Sue Perry had founded a new cycling club called Geared-Up Girls, offering a friendly, non-competitive environment to women who lacked the confidence to ride alone or needed to fit cycling around family commitments.
