A look back at what was going on around here in May 2006.

The Lickey Obelisk featured on our front cover in May 2006, linking to an article on local “follies” including the obelisk and toposcope on the Lickey Hills.

Plans to erect a 17-metre chimney for a rendering plant at Hopwood had been approved by a Government inspector in the wake of a public enquiry – despite objections and protests from local residents, businesses and MP Julie Kirkbride.

There was better news for Lickey & Blackwell, whose parish council had achieved Quality Parish Status – following Barnt Green’s award the previous year.

Ted and pals

* Ted Reeves (left, centre) celebrated his 100th birthday at The Lawns care home in Alvechurch, surrounded by family and friends – including members of the Alvechurch Ex-Services Association.

Denise and kids

* Blackwell couple Denise and Colin Buggins hosted two ten-year-olds from Belarus on behalf of the Chernobyl Children Life Line charity, which brings youngsters to the UK to spend a month in a healthier environment.

Katsiaryna and Krystsina (left, with Denise) enjoyed various outings and playing in the clean air.
