The Alvechurch Morris mummers

The 2012 New Year mummers play brought the latest news to the villagers of Alvechurch and beyond, courtesy of the cast of the Alvechurch Morris.

Continuing the medieval tradition of enlightening the masses by acting out current affairs, a large crowd at The Crown Inn, Withybed, were treated to an irreverent review of the events of the past year.

As the main thrust was “greedy bankers”, St George was this year replaced by Robin Hood, who could be seen taking on the Cameron-Clegg Coalition.

The appearance of the Merchant Banker was greeted with loud boos from the crowd, although they weren’t quite sure what to make of Beelzebub duffing up Old Father Time.

In the end, Jimmy Savile fixed it for everyone, before the dancing continued, including turns by the Alvechurch women’s morris, Aelfgythe, and other sides from around the area.

The action then shifted to the village centre, where Lickey dancers Step on Board performed.
