Songs for the season

Roger and CD

A Lickey End composer of Christian music has produced a seasonal CD with the help of local schoolchildren.

Roger Jones (above) asked friends and pupils to help create the Songs of Christmas album, which includes a wide selection of carols and anthems and a challenging message about fair trade and anti-trafficking.

Roger has created new tunes to traditional carols as well as introducing new songs which feature local soloists, including children who attend Alvechurch Middle School and Webheath Primary School Academy.

Formerly a music teacher in a Birmingham inner-city school, Roger took up a full-time Christian music ministry in 1984 and has written 23 musicals and numerous psalms, hymns and songs which have been performed throughout the UK and abroad.

Some of the new tunes in Songs of Christmas, which offers resources for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, are named after local areas such as Blackwell, Lickey Church, Tile Cross and Small Heath.

One tune is called Sentamu in honour of the former Bishop of Birmingham, now Archbishop of York.

The CD, which incorporates 16 songs, is also suitable for use in schools and churches and has been produced with a music book and backing tracks by Christian Music Ministries.
