Rowney Green villagers have thanked people across the area who supported them in their successful attempt to win £80,000 in the People’s Millions Lottery.

It means they can now press ahead with plans for a new roof on The Peace Memorial Hall. Work is due to start this summer.

The village was featured on the ITV Central evening news when it went head to head with a project in Shropshire. The public had the opportunity to vote for one of the projects and Rowney Green won with the most votes.

Pauline Knight, project organiser, said: ”We are absolutely delighted and would like to thank all the people who voted for us. We have had great support from our surrounding community including individual retailers and local schools.

“We could only win this by raising awareness of our campaign and the whole community has pulled together.”

The telephone number for voting was not known until the morning of the vote, but the small village received 10,014 votes.

“It was the ninth highest number of votes out of 72 projects nationally,” said Pauline.

“We were one of the smallest communities and we realised we needed the help of our friends in the surrounding areas.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us in any way.”
