Alvechurch & Hopwood Cricket Club has been awarded the ECB Clubmark accreditation, recognising “high quality, safety and fair and focused support for young people”.

Pete Gwilliam, a junior coach and committee member of the club, which is affiliated to the Worcestershire County Cricket League, the Cotswold Hills League and to the Arden Sunday League, said: “In our youth and juniors section we are committed to using the Clubmark framework to pave the way for growth and success in the future.

“Cricket is an all-inclusive sport, however each player will have their own needs and we aim to work with the player (and parents) to help develop their cricket technique while assisting them in the development of their co-ordination, agility and balance and, as importantly, working with children on how to behave in a sporting manner.”

He added: “The good news doesn’t stop there – we are delighted to have attracted sponsorship from Clifford Springs Limited which, alongside a Sports England Sportsmatch Award of £1,119, means we can significantly improve our practice facilities.

“New mobile nets will allows us to increase the amount of sessions we can offer existing and new members. We now have six ECB-accredited coaches – we are just hoping for a dry summer!”

John Clifford, managing director of Clifford Springs, said: “It is a pleasure to support the club, and help more people to get involved in a sport where lasting friendships are made.

“I have been really impressed with the club’s desire to invest in its junior section, and there will be more qualified coaches and better practice facilities than at any time in the 40 years I’ve been associated with the club.”

As well as three senior teams and a development team playing on Saturdays and two teams playing on Sundays, the club also has four junior teams, one of which won the East Worcs District League title last summer.

New members are always welcomed and if you’re a cricketer of any ability and would like to meet the committee and a number of the players and enjoy a few free drinks on the evening of Tuesday February 12, contact Nick Jones on 07779 267609.
