A village chuggernaut!

When a group of friends started running together ten years ago they were at the vanguard of something much bigger.

Barnt Green Chuggers began as a small group of runners meeting at a house in the village back in 2003 and has now grown to be a fully recognised running and cycling club, affiliated to England Athletics and Cycle Touring GB.

Now based at Barnt Green Sports Club, the Chuggers aim to provide fun and easy ways for people to start or continue to run or cycle, whether to keep fit or for some other goal.

They run and cycle around the beautiful countryside of Barnt Green, Blackwell, Alvechurch and surrounding areas, splitting into different groups according to ability and desire.

The runners meet on Monday evening at 8pm and run for up to 1.5 hours. Cyclists meet on Wednesday evening at 7pm and cycle for up to two hours. The length and time of the routes are dependent on the ability of the group.

There have been some major achievements along the way, with some Chuggers who had never really run or cycled before now out running or on their bikes regularly.

Others have gone on to run London and New York marathons, climb Kilimanjaro, cycle to Paris and complete a raft of triathlons and local races.

The local races have varied from a 10km around the streets of Bromsgrove to ploughing through mud in an old brickworks.

It is a very sociable club with the emphasis on “fun”, but the club has also seen members achieve national success. Alex Moran is a GB triathlete and Nick Horton a GB Ironman.

Many of these Chuggers’ achievements have been recognised at the annual Christmas awards party, with the overall winner getting the Chugger of the Year trophy.

Chuggers have raised more than £19,000 for charities over the years and have held numerous social events to raise funds for Chugger activities.

Two of the Chaingang cyclists, Dawn Kordan and Sarah Pearson, along with Geoff Thomas, are attempting the London to Paris cycle ride this month in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Barnt Green Sports Club provides a great venue for Chuggers and an important part of club nights is getting together afterwards for a drink and Chugger banter in the Sports Club Bar.

Membership of the Chuggers (which includes membership of the Sports Club) is £40 plus a £10 annual fundraising subscription, and for new members a £10 joining fee (for the entry swipe card).
