Anya Sweeney

A 12-year-old Redditch girl with a big voice was the deserved winner of the ‘Alvechurch Has Got Talent’ competition, held on Sunday July 31 at the village’s Red Lion pub.

Anya Sweeney, from Hunt End, beat off stiff competition from 13 other talented finalists with her soulful rendition of Adele’s recent hit Rolling In The Deep, scooping the first prize of a family break for four at Center Parcs.

Anya, who is originally from Alvechurch and still attends Alvechurch CofE Middle School, was overjoyed at her win:

“I’m over the moon and couldn’t believe it when they called out my name. Adele is one of my favourite artists and I chose that particular song because of all the big notes, so I’m glad I was able to hit them all. I’m also really pleased I was able to win something for all the family, and we’re all really looking forward to Center Parcs now!”

Second place went to Alvechurch teen Martyna Agar (aged 13), with another Adele hit Someone Like You, while third spot went to acoustic guitar duo Daisy Sabin and Lyndsey Hodgetts from Winyates Green in Redditch (both aged 14), who performed The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars. They won £100 and £50 Red Letter Day vouchers respectively.

Around £150 was also raised for Where Next Association – the local charity that provides supported employment, work experience and training to people disadvantaged by learning difficulties or other special needs – via a raffle and tombola stall.

Paul Hodgkinson, landlord at The Red Lion, said: “A wonderful day was had by all, and what a talented bunch of individuals our finalists were! We whittled it down to the best five to start with, so over 21s singer Greg Boughton and magician Bob Cockbill did really well too.

“Anya, however, had real star quality and a beautiful, clear voice and she did exceptionally well to hold her nerve in front of over 300 people.

“There’s been a real buzz around the village about the competition and the final was everything we hoped it would be - an entertaining spectacle for all the family to enjoy with some quality food and festival cask ales, plus great weather too.”

The ‘Alvechurch Has Got Talent’ judges were parish councillor Nicola Wise, Red Lion assistant manager Leanne Geary and Alvechurch locals Nick Hughes and Adam Kirk. This talent show with a difference was split into three age categories (under 14s, 14-21 and over 21s) and all the finalists went through tough auditions to make it to the grand final.
