Geoff Franklin reports on recent developments for the St Laurence Church Bell Restoration Fund.

A fundraising concert took place in the church on October 28, when the Gemini Choir from Barnt Green (pictured) treated the audience to a wonderful performance of European folk songs, spirituals and the music of George Gershwin.

David Martin, Rector of St Laurence, also unveiled the first stage on the fund “thermometer” to indicate that the first £5,000 had been achieved since the bell-ringers launched their appeal in April this year.

The next musical event in aid of bell funds will be early next year when the Arrowvale Singers will be staging a concert in the church.

A quiz and Balti evening was also held on November 24 in the Ark, and St Laurence bell-ringers would like to thank the New Dilshad International Restaurant for their kind and generous sponsorship of the evening’s event in providing the food.

Sponsorship, whatever form it takes, will make a significant difference to the progress of the Bell Restoration Fund, and also gives the band of bell-ringers an important boost in their motivation to keep going.

If any other local business would like to sponsor an event or sponsor a particular bell in its refurbishment we would be delighted to hear from them.

Contact can be made via Colin Bennett, the Tower Captain, on 01527 64077.
