Big Lunch packs a punch

Organisers of a big spring bank holiday party are hoping the weather gods will smile on them.

When 2,500 people descended on The Meadows in Alvechurch to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee last year, it had been raining for days.

Then it stopped for 24 hours – just long enough for everyone to enjoy themselves so much they asked if they could do it all again this year.

So, final preparations are in full swing for Alvechurch Parish’s Big Lunch in the Park – an event for the all the communities from Bordesley to Rowney Green to Weatheroak to Hopwood – being held on Sunday May 26 on the The Meadows and at Alvechurch Cricket Club.

The Big Lunch gets off with a bang, or rather a bark, with a dog show at 11.15am before the official opening by TV news presenter and Alvechurch resident Joanne Malin at noon.

This is followed by a packed programme of entertainment, including a Pantomime Horse Derby, a seahorse race, a performance by Youth@ the Lounge, Songs of Praise and a skiffle band along with many others.

A competition was held at Crown Meadow First School to design a logo for the event, with more than 50 entries. The design of a picnic basket by winner Millie Guy (see left and above) was chosen and is also on the flyer inside copies of The Village magazine distributed within Alvechurch parish with further information.

Villagers are encouraged to bring a picnic with them, while there will also be a pig roast, tea, cakes and other food stalls.

In the evening the event moves over to Alvechurch Cricket Club where there will be a bar serving real ale, a disco and more food available.

A spokeswoman said: “The event should be even bigger and better than last year – fingers crossed for sunshine on the day!”
