Bikes to Benidorm and back

A group of friends are aiming to raise £20,000 for a village charity with a marathon cycle challenge.

Richard Atkinson is one of six men cycling from Benidorm to Redditch this month in aid of Baby Ava’s Support Foundation. He and his wife founded the charity after the death of their newborn daughter in 2014, in order to help other bereaved families.

They provide keepsake memory boxes to neo-natal units for families who have suffered the loss of a baby at or shortly after birth, and also raise funds for essential neo-natal equipment.

The route for the cycle ride was chosen because Richard was in Benidorm when Ava was born at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

The participants will set off on July 24 and aim to return on August 3, covering 1,216 miles across three countries and crossing the Pyrenees.

They started training in November and have also been taking part in local challenges in the lead-up to the main event to raise awareness and sponsorship.

Ava’s parents have also decided to share 10 per cent of the money raised from the bike ride to support Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Brain Tumour Research, to continue the work of young Alvechurch fundraiser Finlay Church who lost his battle with cancer in November.
