Fun in the sun

Celebrating our canal’s bicentenary with a day of fun in the sun.

Two hundred years of local history was celebrated at the Alvechurch Beer & Boat Family Fun Festival, held to mark the bicentenary of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.

Organised by the Worcester-Birmingham & Droitwich Canal Society, the three-day event at Alvechurch Marina incorporated the annual May beer festival at the on-site Weighbridge pub.

This time there were no fewer than 61 beers and 20 ciders and perries to choose from, as well as plenty of home-cooked food.

Narrowboat stalls sold items such as cheeses, jams and traditional crafts, while a diverse programme of live music, poetry and dancing kept the crowds entertained – and children enjoyed activities including bouncy castle and go-karting.
