Calendar boys

Rowney Green men who dared to bare for a charity calendar have raised £2,373 for Prostate Cancer UK.

Organisers and participants handed over a cheque to John Newman, a volunteer with the charity who is receiving treatment for the disease, at the Goat and Trousers pop-up pub in Rowney Green Village Hall.

As well as enjoying a pint, John explained that prostate cancer is now responsible for as many deaths in men as breast cancer in women. He encouraged all women to persuade husbands, partners and friends to request a PSA blood test from their doctor.

The calendar was the brainchild of Jeni and Chris Burton and Pete Jeffs, and the brave volunteers were photographed by Lou Howard.

“The first session was on a cold day in May when a nervous group of men wandered around in pants, socks, shoes and bow-ties, making feeble jokes,” recalls Mike Fellows.

”Well done to all involved. What next? Are the ladies of Rowney Green feeling nervous?”

Sales of the calendar raised £1,903, with a further £470 in donations.
