Church funding row is back on agenda

Posted on April 30 2017 at 11:47:13

Barnt Green parish councillors are still discussing funding for churchyard maintenance at St Michael’s in Cofton Hackett, after Coun Charlie Hotham was approached by residents who say St Michael’s is as much part of Barnt Green as St Andrew’s.

The council had previously voted not to grant a request from St Michael’s for £250, and chairman Robert Cholmondeley again argued that maintenance should be covered by the church’s own budget.

“There are people of other denominations living here – why should their money go just to the Church of England, one of the wealthiest institutions in the country?” he said.

“The icing on the cake is that St Michael’s is not even in our parish.”

However, Coun Hotham said it was “only right and proper” that a one-off donation should be made from council reserves, as all Barnt Green parishioners have the right to be christened, married or buried at St Michael’s.

A decision was deferred until a future council meeting.
