Clash over memorial garden

Posted on November 28 2016 at 10:17:40

Blackwell First School has proposed that Lickey & Blackwell Parish Council takes over the maintenance of Jen’s Place, the memorial garden in the field opposite the school.

Coun Anna Boehm told councillors she had had a site meeting with the chair of governors, who suggested that the school would continue to mow the grass but wanted the council to look after the sculpture and plaques, which are currently in need of deep cleaning and repair.

Coun Stephen Nock said:  “I don’t want to be Scrooge at this festive time, but the clean-up does not benefit parishioners – it only benefits the school, which uses the garden.

“The school is a commercial entity these days, so they should pay.”

Coun Boehm replied that a neat and tidy garden benefitted everyone, and that the ongoing maintenance costs should not be too onerous.

It was decided to defer a final decision pending further discussion.
