Clean sweep for village

Posted on November 23 2007 at 11:39:27

Alvechurch Village Society members are urging other residents to join them in making sure the village starts the New Year looking spick and span.

They are planning to give the village a spruce up by having a Litter Pick on Saturday December 29 from 11am –1pm.

A spokeswoman said: “We would like as many people as possible to join us.”

She said there were three ways people could help:

“You can join us on the 29th for half an hour, one hour or two hours. It’s a great way to work off some of those extra pounds we put on over Christmas, to meet other people and to improve our environment.

“You could spend a few minutes during that week clearing any litter from the immediate vicinity of your house – even if half of us did this it would have a tremendous impact. Finally, you can let us know of any particular litter blackspots that we should target.”

She added: “The more people that are involved, the greater the area we can cover. You can just turn up on the day – we shall be meeting at 10.45am in the village precinct – but it will be especially helpful if you can sign up beforehand so that we can cover the area more effectively.”

Volunteers can sign up at the Parish Office in the centre of the village, or by calling 0121 4451683 or emailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Alvechurch Village Society is working with Bromsgrove District Council and Alvechurch Parish Council, which are supplying protective wear and equipment.

* Alvechurch Parish Council has appointed a litter “tsar” to co-ordinate volunteer and official efforts to keep the village centre tidy.

Peter McHugh, who is a parish councillor, said he was happy to take on the role, adding: “I would like the centre to look like a heritage village, somewhere tourists might like to see.”
