Cofton Park to host Pope Benedict XVI

As many as 80,000 people are expected to gather in Cofton Park at the foot of The Lickeys for a surprise Papal visit.

Pope Benedict XVI had been due at Coventry airport on September 19, but Catholic authorities have asked to switch venues to Cofton Hackett.

Despite being able to accommodate fewer pilgrims than the 200,000 expected in Coventry, it means the Pope can perform the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman close to his burial site.

Cardinal Newman, who founded Birmingham Oratory, was buried in the cemetery by the Oratory Fathers’ house in the woods on Rednal Hill, between the shops and Rose Hill golf course. Beatification is one of the steps towards sainthood.
