Daisy’s story raises smiles

Daisy

A budding author from Barnt Green has won a young writers’ competition with her short story about a case of mistaken identity.

Eight-year-old Daisy Jenkinson heard about the contest, held by Worcester Severn Rotary Club as part of a national scheme, through Kings Hawford School in Worcester where she is a Year 4 pupil.

This year’s theme was “My Inspiration” and Daisy’s story triumphed in the Junior category for children aged seven to 10.

She was asked to attend a Worcester Severn Rotary Club meeting at Worcester Golf and Country Club, where she read out her story to the judges and members and received a certificate and book vouchers.

The judges said that Daisy’s story was “excellent”, showing clarity, humour and a good twist. They described it as “amusing, well-structured and written, without any unnecessary material.”

Daisy was then informed that as a local heat winner, her entry had also been entered into the district-wide competition, encompassing 29 Rotary clubs across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Monmouthshire, Bristol and Somerset.

She was declared the runner-up, narrowly beaten by an older girl from Nailsea. Daisy attended another awards ceremony in Gloucester, where her work was displayed and she was awarded another certificate.

My Inspiration. . . to get to Hollywood

I am Daisy Jenkinson and boy do I have an amazing story to tell. Well, you may wonder why it says Hollywood in my title, but I’ll tell you more about that later. First, let me set the scene for you.

I have always wanted to be in a movie, more than anything. It’s what inspires me every day so I auditioned for lots of parts at school and was always practicing in front of the mirror. So imagine how excited I was when I got a phone call from The LA Movie Theatre Company.

In case you are wondering, LA is Los Angeles and Hollywood is in Los Angeles. . . you get the picture right? So I packed my bags, booked my flight, got changed into my most sparkly clothes, it was America after all.

When I arrived a really long car picked me up at the airport, I think they call it a Limousine. It felt amazing and I waved at everyone who looked at me. The audition theatre was huge and the stage was even bigger! A big man in the front row was shouting “NEXT”

That’s when my phone rang, I answered and a man said “Hello you must be Daisy? Where are you?”

“Well, yes I am, how did you know?” I said, a little puzzled. He went on to explain that he was the guy who invited me to come to Bollywood…BOLLYWOOD?

“So not Hollywood then?” I asked?  Now wait a minute, he’s in Bolly-wood, India and I’m in Hollywood, NOT India! After a few minutes of saying sorry, he was gone. It turned out that LA was Lassan Area… a part of India and NOT Los Angeles. My dream was over.

“NEXT!!!”  What was I to do?

“You must be Sandra?” said the big man. I paused… “Yeah, sure that’s me, Sandra!”

The audition went really well. I sang, I danced, and I even did a few jokes that made the big man laugh. “You’re fantastic!” he shouted and I was beaming from ear to ear. That’s when the doors burst open.

“OMG sooo sooorrrryyy I’m late,” said the young girl in the bright red dress. “The limo didn’t even turn up!”

The big man turned to me and then to the girl in the red dress… and then to me and back to the girl in the red dress!

“Who are you?” He shouted at the top of his voice.

“Golly” she exclaimed “I’m Sandra!”
