Don’t miss the Morris

Morris group

Once again at this time of year, Alvechurch Morris are busy preparing for the performance of their Mumming Play on New Year’s Day.

Go along and see St George fight off, among others, a terrifying dragon and the Turkish Knight in his quest to win the hand of the “beautiful” damsel.

The Crown in Withybed Lane will be the venue for the play, with the day getting under way at noon with some dancing by Alvechurch Morris and invited guest sides Plum Jerkum and Armaleggan (both to be confirmed).

Alvechurch Morris was formed in 1989 to dance in the Border Morris style of the area. The group dances all year round, attending a couple of weekend folk festivals, days of dance organised by other sides and days out busking – and during the summer, with other groups at various local hostelries on Monday nights.

Alvechurch Morris is a men’s side and, as most of the “dance outs” tend to take place at licenced premises, there is an over-18 policy for members.

The group is currently looking for new members and will be holding an open practice on Monday January 14, in The Baptist Church Hall at 8.30pm – no experience necessary.
