It was a double celebration for local triathletes Helen Russell and Andrew Cunnell after both won medals at the England Sprint Triathlon Championships.

The race attracted England’s top age-group triathletes, who took on the 750m open water swim, a 20k bike course and a 5km run.

Blackwell resident Andrew, who usually specialises in Olympic distance races and is still recovering from an injury which forced him out of racing last year, still took the silver medal in the 65-69 age category.

He is now looking forward to the Triathlon World Championships in London next month.

Marlbrook-based Helen, who races for Team Tri-UK, dominated her race from start to finish and won gold in the 35-39 age category with a final time of 1.14.27.

This was her final triathlon of the season as she will now turn her attention to the national and world aquathlon titles.
