Farewell to friendly face

Milkman and pals

Barnt Green residents (from left) Ursula Matthews, Lee Bate, Sue Whittaker, and Doris Watts bid farewell to popular milkman Michael O’Brien, who is giving up his round after 22 years.

His business will now be operated by Grovewood Dairy, whose locally-produced and processed milk he has already delivered for the last few years.

Many customers will by now have been introduced to new milkman Andy Matthews, who aims to provide the same friendly and reliable service as Mike.

Meanwhile, Lee has written this poem as a tribute to Mike:

Mike, you’ve been our village treasure
Up at three in every weather
Delivering milk to us every day
Being so caring along the way
You’ve watched us move from this house to that
And always found time for a friendly chat.

Our little notes you’ve often found
As you’ve gone about your milky round
This last one wishes you all the best
You really do deserve a rest
Thank you Mike for all you’ve done
Now put your feet up and have some fun!
