Alvechurch Parish Council is to maintain its spending on Christmas lighting.

As councillors voted to raise the parish precept by 4 per cent – adding around £2 to the annual council tax bill for a Band D home – Coun Sue Lambert asked: “Why are we paying more than £1,400 for Christmas lights?”

Chairman Coun Andy Humphries pointed out that the bill included the costs of installation and removal of the lights in the centre of the village.

He added: “Barnt Green spends a lot more on its Christmas lights and we are in danger of being branded as Scrooges.”
