First look at new station plans

New plans for Alvechurch station

Plans for new platforms and a pedestrian bridge at Alvechurch Station have been revealed by Network Rail.

The £20 million scheme will create a second line from just north of Alvechurch for 3km towards Redditch. This will allow for three trains an hour to carry an anticipated 32 per cent more passengers by 2020.

If the plans are approved, work is expected to begin on the project next winter, with the new platforms – including lifts up to the bridge level – opening in the winter of 2014. Construction work will mean the line between Redditch and Barnt Green will be closed for eight weeks in the summer of 2014.

There are no plans to upgrade the car park, although Network Rail is looking at ways to improve drainage there. The new station will not be staffed, but a ticket machine will be installed next year.
