Fresh veg for all in village scheme

Posted on June 30 2018 at 12:27:21

A group of volunteers aiming to bring the community together by growing and sharing fresh produce are hoping to expand the scheme in Alvechurch.

The village branch of Incredible Edible, which has some 250 groups around the UK, is growing vegetables in planters in Tanyard Lane car park, maintained by volunteers, with residents able to help themselves to the produce.

Group leader Tim Reading told Alvechurch Parish Council that the aim is to reintroduce people to where food comes from, and encourage them to enjoy fresh air, exercise and a sense of community.

The group asked if it could also use council planters in The Square and outside the Red Lion, but since flowers for the planters had already been bought, councillors decided to wait until next year – if the scheme proved successful.
