The 2012 Olympics may be taking place 100 miles away in London, but residents of Blackwell will only have to travel down the road to get involved in the spirit of the Games.

The village is hosting its very own week-long sporting extravaganza, the Blackwell Community Games, to bring the community together in sport and recreation.

From July 7 to 14, the Games will take place in various Blackwell locations, encompassing nine different sports and encouraging all ages and abilities to take part.

On Saturday July 7, the Games incorporates the popular Blackwell Wheelers Community Challenge, which is open to all ages and abilities, while on Sunday July 8 there’s a chance to go orienteering in the Lickey Hills. Start at 10.30am at the Visitors’ Centre and take the senior or junior course – the event is suitable for individuals or groups who want to run or walk.

On Mon July 9 it’s under-16s football at Hunter’s Hill Technology College (4.15pm), and Tuesday July 10 brings swimming at Blackwell Court from 6–8pm as well as netball at Hunter’s Hill (time TBA).

More football, this time for ages 16+, takes place at 6pm on Wednesday July 11, then on Thursday July 12 it’s table tennis at the Village Hall

and badminton at Hunter’s Hill (times TBA). See if you’re lucky at archery on Friday July 13, from 5–7pm at Blackwell Court.

The Games concludes on Saturday July 14 with events in and around the field on St Catherine’s Road, including running races, a tug of war and a 5km road race.

There are also plans for golf events at Rose Hill during the week – keep an eye on http://www.blackwell for confirmation.
