Hall gets ramp revamp

Work will soon begin on the construction of a new entrance ramp and steps at the front of Alvechurch Village Hall.

This was the most requested improvement when the committee surveyed users and villagers, and features prominently in the five-year plan created as a result.

The more accessible entrance is set to make the hall more usable and welcoming, and is designed to be sympathetic to the existing structure, with railings created by the same company that worked on the entrance to The Meadows.

It has been funded largely by a grant from the National Lottery Awards for All, along with money raised via the village Co-op’s charity fundraising scheme.

The hall’s management committee has told villagers: “The work will inevitably lead to some disruption for users and the community, but we are working with our contractors to ensure that this is minimised.

“Please bear with us – when the new entrance is in place we hope you will agree that any short-term inconvenience has been worthwhile!”

Access to the hall will be maintained via the single door at the front of the building and the side entrance (which provides level access to the main hall).

Work is planned to start at the end of September and is expected to take three or four weeks. The aim is to formally unveil the ramp at this year’s Pumpkin Festival, which takes place at the hall on Saturday October 26 from 10.30am to 4pm.

The Festival, now in its third year, is the largest fundraising event for the hall and Papyrus (Prevention of Young Suicide) in the village.

As part of the preparations, a badge design competition was held at Alvechurch Middle School, and Aneesh Benson’s design (right) was picked as the winner.

There will be displays of carved and decorated pumpkins, home-grown pumpkins and craft items – plus pumpkin-themed activities for children, and pumpkin soup and cakes in the Pumpkin Café.

Entry forms and more information can be found at or on the Facebook page: Alvechurch Pumpkin Festival.
