Bill Ulyett, chairman of trustees at The Lounge youth project and cafe in Alvechurch, explains how villagers can help out.

After the crisis meeting over the future of The Lounge some 18 months ago, we want to keep the village up to date with our activities, and particularly to explain how others could get involved and ensure it has a bright future.

There has been plenty going on: over the summer, young people have planned and been on trips to Ragley Hall, Drayton Manor theme park and the cinema in Redditch.

There have been sessions on money management to promote financial awareness and, as ever, a busy schedule of after-school youth activities.

We are planning three other special events during the autumn session that the young people have requested.

We are proud to report that a large number of young people take part in youth activities, and numbers keep steadily increasing. But resources are stretched – and to keep on delivering activities in a fun and engaging way we need more volunteers to help at youth club evenings.

You will have seen some works going on to improve the shopping precinct where we are based, and in the very near future the landlords will be working on the frontages.

While this gives us a chance to rethink the layout, there will be an inevitable increase in costs that we will need to pay for.

So how can you help The Lounge?

* Be part of an awesome team! Currently there is great pressure on a very small number of volunteers who are keeping the management, youth and café services going. We are keen to hear from people who wish to do the following:

* Be a Trustee: ensure the health and growth of the Lounge!

* Be on the Management Committee: offer your expertise in finance, interior design, digital media, marketing.

* Be a youth volunteer: support young people who come down in the evenings to socialise and have fun in a safe environment

* Volunteer in the café: Meet new friends, tidy the kitchen and learn how to make great coffee!

If you think that you might be able to support us, here are a few questions that usually come up:

How much time do I need to put into volunteering?

It varies from sparing a few hours occasionally, to three to four hours a week for some roles. Some roles are on a “rota” basis, so don’t require a weekly commitment.

Most of our current volunteers have other commitments such as caring or full-time work.

Do I need to be CRB checked?

No – all our youth leaders are, but it’s not necessary for volunteering.

Can I volunteer as part of my DofE activity?

Yes, we have had great support in the past on the youth work and we would like to expand this to cover such things as digital media.

If you think that you can help us maintain The Lounge for the future, and could volunteer, you can either pop into The Lounge, visit our Facebook page or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), where we would be more than happy to talk and ensure that The Lounge has a bright future.
