A Barnt Green resident who recently survived breast cancer is raising funds so that a Togolese woman with the same disease can have life-saving treatment.

Rachel Meller (right), co-owner of Continental Collection in Barnt Green, heard about the plight of 37-year-old Nathalie (far right) through her friend Rebecca Reynolds, who grew up in the village area and works for a charity in Togo, one of the world’s poorest countries.

Nathalie, who lives in a small village with her husband and three young children, found a lump in her breast ten months ago, but with no screening available locally, she had to make the eight-hour trip to Togo’s capital, Lomé, to be diagnosed.

She needs chemotherapy and a mastectomy, plus radiotherapy – for which she will have to travel to neighbouring Ghana – and her family simply does not have the money to pay for it.

“When Rebecca told me about Nathalie, it struck a chord because she is the same age as me,” says Rachel.

“But while I received all the treatment I needed free of charge, there is no NHS in Togo – if you can’t find the money for your treatment, you’ll die.”

Rachel has set up a GoFundMe page for Nathalie, to help fund her ongoing treatment and accommodation in Ghana.
