The crashed lorry at Hopwood

Thieves broke into a haulage yard in Hopwood last night, stole a 44-ton lorry with a full load of aluminium, then crashed at a roundabout half a mile away.

They got into the J R Foster Haulage yard on the A441 Birmingham Road by using an angle grinder to remove the padlock from the gates.

They then smashed a window to get into an office by and forced open a key safe to take the keys to a 440ton Daf lorry full of scrap aluminium, worth a large quantity of money.

The drove the lorry, registration number DK05 MXW, less than half a mile before losing control on the roundabout near Hopwood Park Services and jack-knifing the lorry on to its side, spilling its cargo.

The driver was seen running away on foot in the direction of Alvechurch.

The collision happened at about 11.20pm. The road was closed until about 5.30am this morning while the lorry was removed and debris and spilt fuel cleared away.

PC Billy Keys of West Mercia Police said: “If there had been any other vehicles near the lorry when it tipped over, the occupants could have been very seriously injured or killed.

“We’re keen to hear from anyone who saw the yard being broken into, the lorry on its short journey to the roundabout where it crashed, or the driver running off.”

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact PC Keys on 0300 333 3000 quoting incident 815-s-100211 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
