Horseplay in the hills

Now in its third year, the Lickey Hills Bilberry Wake has been revived to commemorate a time when real horses were raced for competition.

Having made their steeds from stuffed socks, stuck-on eyes, folded ears and a length of branch, the young “riders” had to overcome hurdles and the cunning final water jump.

Medals, badges and a great deal of satisfaction were handed out, with the adults having their own chaotic race as the finale.

A week earlier, the Lickey Hills Teeny Explorers could be seen making their very own hobby-horses (with a little help!)

The event was organised by Lickey Hills Society volunteers in conjunction with the Lickey Hills Country Park Rangers.
