Family and friends of an Alvechurch teenager who died of leukaemia present a cheque for more than £6,000 towards the Acorns fundraising appeal to build a new children’s hospice.

The money was raised when more than 70 people took part in the Michael Edwins Memorial Walk last December as a tribute to the 19-year-old.

The walkers’ 18-mile circular route started in the village and went via Bromsgrove and Redditch.

The £6,219.89 total raised is going towards buying equipment and furniture for the adolescents’ common room in the new hospice, being built on the outskirts of Worcester.

The hospice will be completed this month and welcome families early in 2005.

“We’ve had a lot of support from Acorns and we wanted to do something to make sure that Michael was not forgotten as well as help raise awareness of the new hospice,” said Michael’s father, Dave.

“We are delighted with how much the walk has raised and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part and the many local companies who sponsored it.”
