In Full . . .

It’s picnic party time!

It’s nearly here: Alvechurch Parish Picnic in the Park takes place on Sunday May 28 and organisers hope it will be as spectacular as ever, with new and exciting additions to the usual line up of entertainment, stalls and fun for everyone.

With Alvechurch FC having been crowned winners of the Midland Football League, the management team of Ian Long and Richard Cowell will be opening the Picnic with the help of the logo winner and runners-up.

Alvechurch Youth Football Team will be running some sessions during the afternoon, so come along to brush on up on your skills.

Elsewhere on The Meadows, you will find pony rides, and the usual bouncy castle to keep little ones happy.

The official orienteering markers, which were plotted last year with sponsorship from ABC Boat Hire, will be in place for the Picnic, and you are invited to purchase a map at the information tent, in return for a small prize on discovering the word that the letters make.

Don’t forget “Alvechurch’s Best Go-Kart” competition, which will see participants race for the first-ever title this year. To enter your kart, visit, read the guidelines and complete the form.

The stalls this year are a perfect mix of old and new, with a variety of baked goods, drinks, arts and craft activities and sales, garden and animal lovers, and local charities.

On the centre stage, the line-up includes the samba band; Piloxing with Alison Benford; Cantare Choir; Riopedre Dance Group; Alvechurch Dramatic Society; Alvechurch Community Choir; jazz from Tea for 2; and music from “Chances”.

Later the fun continues at the cricket club, where Alvechurch Morris Men will open an evening of musical entertainment.

The raffle has a great variety of prizes, including day trip boat hire from Alvechurch Marina. You can buy tickets from The Lounge, or in The Square on Saturday May 6 from 9am to 2pm, where full details of prizes will be available.

Download a final programme from the website the day before the Picnic to ensure that you don’t miss anything. Don’t forget you can enter the dog show online in order to avoid the paperwork on the day.

As ever, the event relies on the kindness of local people to ensure its smooth running. There was a great response to pleas for stewards last year, and organisers are appealing for people to help set up in the morning (in particular anyone with skills in erecting gazebos!) and take turns in the information tent throughout the day.

The organisers would like to thank the event’s regular sponsors Thomas Brothers, Michael Pretty Estate Agents, Lovell and Co,, ABC Leisure and At Home with Lou.
