Ladies of the dance

Posted on September 19 2008 at 11:19:14

A group of Alvechurch woman have got together to add a new twist to English morris dancing.

Taking their name from the Saxon lady from whom “Alvechurch” is derived, Aelfgytha are a women’s border side who dance with sticks and traditional black faces.

Aelfgytha have already secured bookings for 2009 and will dance with the infamous Alvechurch Morris side on New Year’s day, as well as dancing at both the Weighbridge and Blackwell Social Club beer festivals next year.

Fourteen women – dancers and musicians – have already signed up and Aelfgytha are looking for new recruits. They should enjoy the social side of frequenting local hostelries and perhaps bring musical talent to the side – or just be willing to have a go and learn the moves while clashing sticks with their partners.

Aelfgytha are hoping they will also make an impact further afield at folk and dance festivals.
