Library review leaves readers in the dark

After more than a year under review, the future of Worcestershire’s libraries, including Alvechurch, which serves most Village readers, remains unclear.

The report from the cost-saving review “doesn’t take us any further forward”, county councillor Charlie Hotham told parish councillors.

Initial ideas revealed in 2018 suggested Alvechurch could be a “community-run” library, but campaigners pointed out that because it was built under a Private Finance Initiative (PFI), the premises budget of more than £46,000 a year alone would rule that out.

Coun Hotham said: “I was expecting to hear, ‘This is what we are going to do with the various libraries’.

“You have to ask why they are not saying this. Is it because they have had so much political grief?

“They have managed to save some money, so maybe they are rowing back a little on what they are going to do in libraries, but I don’t know.”

He added: “They have still got to save £280,000 off the libraries budget.”
