Police are appealing for witnesses to a head-on car crash in Cofton Hackett in which a man was killed.

The man, in his 30s, has not been named but it is thought he was from this area.

He was driving a blue Peugeot 206 which was in collision with an orange VW Beetle at about 11.05pm on Friday. Police say the cars were travelling in opposite directions.

The female driver of the Beetle and her male passenger, who are both in their late teens, were taken by ambulance to the Redditch Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Peugeot was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not yet been named. The Worcestershire coroner has been informed and an inquest will be opened in due course.

The road was closed until around 3am.

Sgt Steve Hastie, of West Mercia Police, said: “A man has tragically lost his life and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

“An investigation has been launched into how and why this collision occurred, and we are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact us on 0300 333 3000, quoting incident reference 780-S-041111.”

The accident happened on a stretch of road subject to a recent speed limit and traffic control review.

The limit is to be reduced to 30mph for much of the road from the Rose Hill island, although the recommendation from Worcestershire County Council highways chiefs is that the section where the accident is believed to have taken place will remain at 40mph.
