The Lounge community internet café celebrated its first month in business with its official opening by Village MP Sajid Javid.

Unveiling a “plaque” at the Alvechurch village centre venue this morning, Sajid praised the energy and enthusiasm that had brought such an ambitious project to fruition.

“I was honoured to be asked to open The Lounge,” he told The Village.

“It was wonderful to see how the hard work of so many local volunteers has paid off.

“I am sure it will make a difference and that young people, in particular, will be grateful.”

Initially inspired by the need to provide a meeting place for teenagers in the village, the venture is now offering facilities for all ages as well as being an increasingly popular evening club for youngsters.

A few days before the official opening, members of Alvechurch Women’s Institute and the Silver Threads club were treated to some special service by two DJs from BRMB radio.

Foxy (below, left) and Giuliano, who present the morning show, came to The Lounge ready to don rubber gloves and pour the tea for the guests as part of a community outreach project by the radio station.
