New hope for station lifts

Barnt Green parish councillors are hopeful that the promised railway station lifts may be installed by 2020, after a meeting with Network Rail representatives.

Discussions have taken place between Network Rail and the Department of Transport, and it is now proposed that the lifts be funded via the Access for All Scheme.

Parish chairman Robert Cholmondeley told colleagues that although a definitive date had not been given, Network Rail aimed to submit the specifications and documentation to the Department of Transport in three months’ time.

“The decision on whether funding will be granted will probably take a further three to six months, and then contracting and scheduling would need to be undertaken – apparently the work would require rewiring of the station and there would also need to be train diversions.

“We are told that 2020 is a realistic date, but Network Rail’s track record doesn’t give us much hope that words will turn into reality.”

Coun Susan Whitehand commented that it looked as if Network Rail had never intended to install the lifts.

Coun Cholmondeley said: ”They probably didn’t include the scoping work in the budget for fear that the high cost could scupper the whole Bromsgrove project. It is disappointing that they came to our meetings and told us it was in the budget.”

Meanwhile, the new Cofton footbridge is now not due to be completed until the end of September.
