Party in the park to mark jubilee

The Queen… or not

Alvechurch is putting the finishing touches to plans for a big party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The main event will be a Picnic in the Park, including an afternoon of entertainment and an appearance by “The Queen” herself (right).

Hosted by Alvechurch Parish Council at The Meadows, this takes place on Monday June 4 from 11am-6pm, when villagers are invited to bring blankets, chairs and a picnic. There will also be food stalls, including a pig roast.

Among the main attractions will be a performance of Morris Side Story, featuring more than 50 performers from the village’s two Morris dancing sides alongside members of Alvechurch Dramatic Society, Alvechurch Community Choir, the Acoustic Roots Band and the Bandasemnome samba band.

There will also be performances by groups from The Lounge, Kicks School of Dance and a Fawlty Towers Farce.

When the picnic ends, the actions switches over the newly upgraded footbridge from The Meadows to Alvechurch Cricket Club, where there will be a disco and bar.

A Right Royal Variety Performance is to be held at Alvechurch Village Hall on June 2 from 8-11pm to raise funds to pay for events in The Meadows. This will have a music hall feel and will end with a Royal Barn Dance – again, attended by “The Queen”. Tickets are £6 from The Joshua Tree in The Square.

There will also be a family fun day at Alvechurch Cricket Club on June 3 from 10am-8pm, with six-a-side teams competing in a five-over format that “sees ‘agricultural’ cricket collide with the real game”. There will be an all-day bar and barbecue.

Meanwhile, the Alvechurch Village Hall Committee has been organising a giant raffle to pay for commemorative jubilee mugs for every child in the village aged 0-13.

The committee has garnered more than 40 prizes from enthusiastic local businesses and tickets will soon be selling around the village, with the big draw at The Meadows on June 4.
