Plea for new street lights in village

Posted on August 30 2016 at 10:40:22

A Barnt Green resident has shared his concerns with the parish council over a lack of street lighting on Hewell Road.

Mr Johnston told the council meeting that there was “not a light to be seen” from the doctors’ surgery to the fish and chip shop, and that he had already had a fall.

“It’s terrible for people who can’t see or walk well, or even healthy people. It would not take too much cash to give us adequate lighting.”

Coun Edwin Gumbley said he has raised this when he joined the council five years ago, but it had gone “off radar”.

He added: “I can attest to the darkness – I walked into a wheelie bin I didn’t even see! We have a duty of care, and we need to resolve it before winter.”

Chairman Robert Cholmondely said: “It’s lethal, and not helped by the state of the pavements. But there could be complaints from residents if lights shine into their homes. Do we want to be like a suburb or a country village?”

He said he would look into getting a quote for extra lighting.
