Last year's picnic

After last year’s decision to shift the Alvechurch Picnic in the Park to the late May Bank Holiday proved a success, organisers are hoping for another day of lovely weather for this year’s event on Sunday May 27.

Taking place as usual on The Meadows, the theme will be “Princes and Princesses” in celebration of the forthcoming Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

There will be a fancy dress competition and a parade – look out for more details coming soon. The logo competition will be launched officially next month.

The committee has been busy planning the event, taking into account the feedback from last year.

There are plans for new and varied stalls including nine new businesses from the village and surrounding areas, plus entertainment for the children – and there will be an MC for the day to keep everyone aware of events as they happen as well as the raffle prize draw and any other announcements.

The ever-popular dog show will start the day at 11am, and festivities will continue through the afternoon and into the evening at Alvechurch Cricket Club with further entertainment, food and drink.

Applications are now open for stallholders and any entertainers who may be interested in performing during the day or in the evening at the cricket club. Volunteers would be very welcome to help in the planning or stewarding on the day.

The committee is very grateful for the continued support and sponsorship of Michael Pretty, Thomas Brothers, Charles Lovell and Co, At Home with Lou, and Log.Co.

* The date for this year’s Blackwell Festival has been announced as Saturday June 16.

There are no further details as yet, other than that the event will take place as usual on the playing field off St Catherine’s Road.

A fundraising quiz in support of the Festival takes place on Saturday March 10 at Blackwell Social Club – sign up now to make sure of a place.
