Pupils turn on the power

The team

Pupils from Bromsgrove School recently competed in an electric car challenge, racing a vehicle they designed and built themselves.

The event at the historic Mallory Park race track in Leicestershire was organised by the Greenpower Education Trust, which encourages involvement in green technology.

Students are guided by their teachers and an industry mentor to design, build and race an electric car, with competitions held at major motor circuits around the UK.

The Bromsgrove School team had put hundreds of hours into building and modifying the car, researching, testing, practising, learning rules and regulations and attracting sponsorship.

Their car (nicknamed “The Chicken”) performed admirably in testing ahead of the two 80-minute races, and the team finished 22nd out of 39 entries – including teams from universities and companies.

They are now hoping to reach the national finals at Goodwood in October.

Owen Matthews, Head of Design Technology at the school, said, “The pupils organised the entire day themselves – scrutineering, testing, the race, pit stops, problem solving – all without any help from the teachers. There were not many teams there who could say that!”
